I'm trying to be better about recording conversations that I have with Ryan here instead of on FB. So here are a 2 of my favorites from the past 2 weeks:
Last week Ryan had a fever and on one of the days said: "Momma [I'm going to] take a nap so I won't be cranky!" That was definitely music to my years!
A few days ago I was trying to get that wriggly little boy into the car seat, and said, in a bit of exasperation, "Ryan, are you a monkey?" He said, "No" and giggled.
Me: Are you... a bear??
Ryan: No, momma! (giggles)
Me: Are you... a little boy?
Ryan: No, Momma!!
Me: Then what are you?
Ryan: I'm a Ryan!!!
Well then, yes you are, sweetheart!
So's Life.
Enjoying life. One step at a time.

So it wasn't a stomach bug after all!
Well so much for my New Year's resolution of updating this site more... BUT, I had a really really good reason.
You see, around March, I was feeling run down, cranky, and just not well but couldn't put my finger on it. I thought maybe it was because the market sucked, revenue was down, and management was riding our a$$es like there was no tomorrow that I was just plain burned out. How else to explain the sheer exhaustion at the end of the day, right? And to top it off, I was just feeling kind of queasy... maybe... well, there was a stomach bug going around at the time.
So I took a day off to try & sleep it off (catch up on sleep?) and tried to veg as much as someone that cannot sit still could possibly do. And just for the heck of it, I took a home pregnancy test.. and yup, you know where this is headed - I got the big "+" sign!
I just finished the 1st trimester, and am hoping all the nausea will go away. This pregnancy has been more difficult due to the exhaustion and aversion to most foods, and hopefully this'll end soon. The joke is that the baby is a girl because she's been giving me all sorts of grief already! There are so many things that make my stomach turn these days. The only constant foods I can put down seem to be goldfish crackers, which are a daily breakfast staple, and anything with lemonade in it. I completely gave up running at 10 weeks due to my rather big belly (it looks like an unsightly beer gut; ironic since I don't even like beer) and being tired all the time. With Ryan, I was still doing pretty well at 22 weeks. Maybe it's a sign that this little one will slow down a bit unlike her faster-than-lightening brother!
Josh & I are pretty excited about the baby; Ryan.... no clue. But, we have a good 6 months to work on this! The baby's due November 29th, just before Josh's birthday. That's my big present to him this year, haha!

Finally!! Some common sense
The brouhaha over the Chua piece on being a Tiger Mom seems to have a life of its own. Since an earlier post mentioned it, here's a great rebuttal to her child-rearing methods.

Daddy? Where Daddy go?
Poor Ryan!
Not only has he been sick this week (started with a 103.3 degree fever on Sunday, now a bad cough), but he's missing his daddy, who's been in Vegas for "work." (Yes, I think using the words "Vegas" and "work" together in the same sentence is an oxymoron!)
So the last 2 nights, Ryan's been asking me to draw pictures of Daddy:

The "scribbles" are Ryan's version of what Daddy looks like... yup, you got it - a big circular mess, haha!! And the faces were drawn by me... not bad if I do say so myself, since I drew them upside down (Ryan sits across from me).

Tiger Mama (roar!)
So last week the Journal ran a rather controversial book excerpt by a Yale law professor that stated the main reason why Chinese kids are more successful in academics is due to strict parental discipline: no playdates, no team sports or after school activities, unless you counted piano & violin (ugh!! torture!!). Not surprisingly there was a swift backlash against the article & the author.
Not that I'm going to debate the merits (or lack thereof) of the article, but I will say that learning & academics is at the heart of Chinese culture. No better point made than when we were at dinner tonight at Tomodachi. I completely forgot to pack the iPad into Ryan's bag, but did have one of his spelling games on the iPhone. He started playing with it, matching up the letters to make the words of animals, and immediately, one of the waitresses made a beeline to him:
"What is that? How old is he? Wow, he's only 2?!?" and on and on she went. At one point, Ryan, annoyed that he was being disturbed by a stranger, put up his hands (as if to indicate, huh? what the heck?), and said "Why? Why?" (Josh and I had a good laugh over that one!) Soon there was a crowd of waitresses oohing & aahing over him.
It made for a pretty amusing dinner, to say the least. Unfortunately, Ryan's charm only went so far this time as we were not offered any freebies (mochi ice-cream would've been nice).

What did you say?
I find it incredible how Ryan's mind works and what words he chooses to get his point across. As they say, "Out of the mouths of babes...."
Recently we've had a couple of pretty funny conversations:
I was giving Ryan a bath one night and he was busy playing with his toys. I said, "Ryan, please give Momma your hand." Ryan, not missing a beat nor looking up says, "Momma, hand busy," and continues playing.
This was followed up, a few weeks later, when I thought I smelled poop.
I asked, "Ryan, did you go poop?"
Ryan: "No Momma, no poop."
Me: "Well, let's go upstairs to check anyway."
So we go upstairs, and he's on the changing pad, and I say, "Geez, Ryan, that's a HUMONGOUS poop and it stinks!"
Ryan giggles and says, "Sorry, Momma."
OMG, I just love that kid!
